joy-unspeakable joy

Born with a gift of beauty, intelligence and physical abilities. Then after a simple broken arm at 6 1/2 years old, her physical abilities were stolen piece by piece, from an unknown disease that was attacking her brain.

Her mom, Missy, wrote a book to tell the world about a very rare genetic disorder, a harrowing story of medical mysteries, allergic reactions that can cause the body to spasm, and ultimately the goodness of God. Without God, Emmy would not be here to spread her joy and create smiles wherever she goes. God took all the broken parts in her beautiful, damaged brain and filled them with unspeakable joy.

Crushed, But Not Broken is about unyielding faith, determination, and a desire for truth.

After breaking her arm playing on the monkey bars, Emmy began behaving strangely over the next three months. Not fully understanding what was happening, Missy continued to homeschool her four kids and search for answers as to why Emmy was having headaches followed by nausea. Not one doctor knew, so Missy continued life as normal, which included going to the local pool in Smithfield, Virginia.

What started as one of those normal days at the pool, however, ended with Emmy in a medicine induced coma. Ten days on a ventilator and dozens of tests later, she woken up—physically disabled, a brain full of inflammation and not one marker showing that anything was causing this disease.

Emmy’s doctors put her through multiple medical procedures, hoping to stop the inflammation, but nothing worked. As Emmy’s brain continued to deteriorate, along with all of her physical abilities, her parents finally got the doctors in Virginia to send her to Boston Children’s Hospital to search for a diagnosis and cure.

It was here that all hell broke loose. Chaos became the norm, Emmy’s body began resembling the girl from The Exorcist and not one doctor knew what was happening or could stop Emmy’s body. But God.

God spoke and Missy finally obeyed and that started the long journey to finally leaving the hospital after living there for 10 months. It also built a confidence and unshakeable faith that the whole family would need when the disease would come back. But God knew. He was there in the tiniest of details. He was paving the way to a cure and a new future, far away from Boston. The new life would look nothing like the old one, but the Bosch family would still be a “party of six”!
